The city of Sterling, Virginia is known for its rich history, culture and small-town charm. But, what you won’t find in the city’s tourist brochures or on the city’s official tourism website is what its residents actually do there. Sterling is home to over 6,000 residents and is often overlooked as a quaint and unassuming small town. It’s a great place to live, work and visit, considering its small size and great location about 35 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. Here are a few things you’ll find in Sterling you won’t find anywhere else.

Sterling, VA - A Culture of Service

One of the things you’ll notice right away when you visit Sterling is its strong community service influence. Home of the Sterling Rotary Club, the city is also home to numerous organizations and groups that provide service and support to the local community.  A great example is Sterling’s efforts to host ancillary events during the 2016 Summer Olympics, including a free summer concert series, a free dog and cat walking tour, and a free concert at the South Beach Pier.

Local Artisan Distilleries

Sterling is home to two distilleries, both of which produce the highest quality bourbon in the world. The first, Brown-Forman, is in nearby Prentice, and the other, Sazerac, is in New Orleans. Every year, about 3,500 barrels of both bourbons are produced each day at the two distilleries.  As you’d expect from such leading brands, Sazerac’s release is quite the event. Every year, there’s a Sazerac Celebration to kick off the release, and there are several other events throughout the year to mark the occasion, including a Bourbon Festival in early May.

The Town Square

If you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind, you won’t find it in Sterling. The town is known for its active nightlife, with hundreds of bars and nightclubs within a 15-minute drive. What you’ll find instead is a small downtown square with a few restaurants and a small shops.  This is where you’ll find the majority of the activities in Sterling. On warm summer evenings, you can often find reggae, salsa and other Latin music playing in the background as you picnic, sit-down or just window-shop.

Sterling’s Historic District

If you’re looking for a place to explore some of the more intact historic areas of Sterling, look no further. The city’s downtown area, known as the “Old Town Square”, has a handful of old buildings dating back to the 19th century. St. John’s Church is one of the oldest churches in the country, and the Sterling Presbyterian Church is another. Along with a handful of other historic landmarks, the churches are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You’ll also find the Civil War-era cannon and the Harper’s Ferry National Historic Site, which is where the town’s namesake first set foot in 1811.

Town Green

If you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beautiful summer day, look no further than the Town Green in Sterling. This city park is filled with picnic and barbecue areas, as well as a beach access. You’ll find live music and events throughout the summer, and you can also catch the Sterling Symphony Orchestra here in winter.

Sterling’s Food and Drink

If you’re looking for places to dine out in Sterling, the list is long. There are over 50 restaurants and bars within a 15-minute drive of downtown, and many of them are open late. The city’s most popular restaurant, Fuddruckers, is found in nearby Hillsville, and you’ll find plenty of other chain restaurants in the area. Dinner is certainly one of the highlights of any visit to Sterling. Start your meal with a slice of cake or cookie at one of the nearbySweetest Cakes, or indulge in a slice of lemon meringue at the adjacent Lemon Meringue.
